Park and Recreation in Glen Carbon
1. Miner Park: Located in the Old Town section. This is the main park of the Village, with direct access to the 15-mile Nickel Plate Bike Trail. The annual GlenFest festivities are held here in the fall.
2. Village Hall Park: This is the primary sporting and recreational complex. The 3-acre park also features a Little Folks Playground, shelter pavilions, and a concession stand.
3. Greenspace North: 34-acre conservation area that includes a hiking and biking trail. The park features a 2.0-mile loop trail that is great for walking, jogging, biking, or hiking. The trail is paved and well-maintained, and it winds through woods and meadows. There are also a few benches along the trail where you can stop and enjoy the scenery.
4. Greenspace East: A rolling 80-acres designed strictly for walking, jogging, and hiking. Biking is prohibited. The Park includes various amenities, covered picnic table stations, and approximately 9,500 feet of quality, asphalt-covered trials. The park is open from dawn to dusk daily. Admission is free. Dogs are allowed, but they must be on a leash at all times. The park is wheelchair accessible.
5. Madison County Transit Trails: 130 miles of separated bikeways, forming 7 inter-connected loops, consisting of 9 Scenic Trails, constructed on former railroad rights of way, with 46 Bridges and 23 Tunnels. The trails are open to cyclists, pedestrians, and rollerbladers. They offer a variety of scenery, including forests, farmland, and rivers. The trails are a great way to get exercise and explore the outdoors.
6. Ray M. Schon Park: Take a leisurely stroll along the paved paths of Schon Park, a beautiful 36-acre park located in Glen Carbon, Illinois. The park offers stunning views of the lake as well as a variety of amenities, including shaded benches, water fountains, restrooms, pavilions, and a playground. While the lake is not open for boating or swimming, line fishing is permitted with a current Illinois fishing license. So bring your rod and reel and cast a line for some relaxation and fun.
