Officially founded in 1805, Thomas Kirkpatrick was the original settler and named it in honor of his friend Ninian Edwards, the Territorial Governor of Illinois. N.O. Nelson was a St. Louis industrialist who built plumbing factories in the area. Several of his buildings have been renovated and transformed for use as the historic N.O. Nelson Campus of Lewis and Clark Community College. A mile-long visual landscape of picturesque lamposts and more than 50 historic homes dating back to the mid-19th century is known as St. Louis Street and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The county seat is Edwardsville.
The County Seat is also a college town, so expect plenty of low-cost (and fantastic) options from special events to movies to outdoor concerts and, of course, top-notch nightlife, including bars, restaurants, and other go-to's. This town has an urban-meets-suburban vibe — and amazing walkability. As well, the colorful and charming St. Louis Street makes strolling worthwhile. By day, go shopping at mom-and-pop boutiques, venture to nearby museums, or wander the SIU-e campus. You'll find a plethora of dining and coffee shop options throughout it. This dynamic and intellectually stimulating place is home for any stage of life: from starting a career to raising a family to forever homes for living out the golden years.
There are many places to connect with nature, like The Watershed Nature Center, Walking Trails, and The Gardens at SIUE. Leisure activities range from a video arcade, ice skating, and golf to watching the SIUE Cougar games or attending community festivities. Numerous community parks throughout the city, including Plummer Family Park, feature multi-purpose fields for you to get your game on. Sharpen your axe-throwing skills at The Axe Company. Try laser tag, arcade games, or bowling at Edison's Entertainment Complex. Catch a live show at the historical Wildey Theatre. Cool the kids down on a hot summer day at Leon Corlew Park & Splash Pad, or take them indoors for rock climbing at the YMCA. Or, if classic cars, great food, and fun are your idea of a good time, get your kicks at the Annual Illinois Route 66 Festival.
A growing and diverse community. With Edwardsville being the third-oldest town in Illinois it offers a unique selection of homes. From suburban to large estates and historical homes.
The Edwardsville area has numerous high-quality schools in the area as well as in the surrounding Metro East neighborhoods.
If you think Edwardsville could be the perfect place to find your new home, let's get together, and I'll answer any questions you may have.
