The community of Troy has a story that dates all the way back to the early 19th century. This little town was actually founded in 1819 by James Riggin, a man with a vision for a new community in the heart of the Midwest. In 1819, 10 acres in southern IL became Troy after John Jarvis sold it for $10/acre to James Riggen and David Hendershott. With a post office in 1833 and the National Road in 1839, Troy became the first stagecoach stop to and from St. Louis. By 1850, Troy had grown to 250 people and became a legally recognized town in 1857. Troy's growth continued with more farms, industry, shops, churches, and schools. The Commercial Bulletin, Troy's first newspaper, debuted in 1872. A railroad stop and new growth brought about more job opportunities, and Troy officially became a city on April 12, 1892. Troy's small-town charm combined with a convenient location to big city business helped it grow to become the third fastest growing area in the U.S. by 1978. Despite continued growth, Troy has maintained its strong sense of community and promise of opportunity, making it a unique and wonderful place to live.
The City of Troy is approximately 20 minutes from downtown St. Louis and is fantastic for those working and commuting to Scott Air Force Base. The community is strong and welcoming. People are friendly and always willing to lend a hand to their neighbors. The town has a tight-knit feel, with local events and activities that bring people together, such as the annual Troy Homecoming and Farmers Market. The community also values education, with great schools that prioritize student success. Overall, Troy is a great place to live for anyone looking for a warm and friendly community.
