History

Officially founded in 1896, Granite City (fka Kinder (hook) was named by the Niedringhaus brothers, who established it as a steel-making company town for the manufacture of their kitchen utensils made to resemble granite. And just like that, the birth of a steel town was born. The Granite City Steel Mill plant was erected and today it is part of US Steel. In 1959, as the city industry and population grew, it was awarded the distinguished honor of being selected as an "All-American City". There is a fascinating array of stories about people from all walks of life who came from all over the world that saw Granite City as their opportunity to achieve their eternal goal: the American Dream!

Vibe

Make sure to check out "The District" a four-block arts and entertainment hub.  Attend a concert or attend one of the several festivals at Civic Park as well as little pop-up venues.  Tinseltown is a themed holiday pop-up bar. Enjoy modern cocktails with a prohibition-era vibe at Speakeasy. Sip on some fabulous coffees, and incredible cocktails, or try their awesome food at Manhattan's Coffee & Socialhouse, it's like stepping into a 1920 Great Gatsby Socialhouse. There always seems to be some sort of block party or community forum to encourage residents and visitors to mix and mingle.

Activities and attractions

If you're into film, see a movie at the Cinema. The outdoor enthusiast can take in some green space at the 74-acre Wilson Park.
