Enchanted Reindeer Experience Canton IL

A Day At The Reindeer Farm in Canton, IL, is

Extraordinary Fun for the Whole Family

Reindeer at fence being petted

Making holiday magic come to life for families in Illinois. This is where you can get close-up for a personal reindeer experience full of wonderful holiday fun.

No matter how old or young you are, you’re bound to get a kick out of this place! You can get to know these beautiful, gentle creatures that make Christmas possible at the Snowman’s Reindeer Farm just South West of Peoria, and it isn’t the North Pole – but don’t tell the reindeer.

Take a tour of the farm and the reindeer barn, which houses the animals and provides opportunities for interacting with them. You’re sure to fall in love with these naturally curious and affectionate creatures. Although “Snowball,” “Kringle,” or “Sugar Plum” won’t be coming home with you, you will have multiple photo opportunities to capture your magical memories for years to come.

The reindeer will interact with the guests willingly, most of the time. Gently touching and petting the reindeer is permitted. These reindeer don’t eat candy canes, but you can let them nibble from your hand the feed provided by the Snowman’s.

The Snowman’s Farm has grown to include five reindeer. (Snowball, Mistletoe, Sugar Plum, Griswold, and Kringle.) A Mini Donkey Barn that houses “Jingle” and “Jangle” as well as the Reindeer Railway.

These reindeer have very unique personalities. Snowball, a real show-off weighing approximately 400 pounds, likes having his picture taken. He is usually in the pasture, so he likes to greet, follow and interact with the visitors through the fence as they come through the main gate.  Mistletoe has a ladylike calming presence. However, she can be a bit feisty with the other reindeer at times and gets somewhat bossy with Snowball.

Griswold (aka “Grizzy”) is friendly, has high energy, and his comical side makes him shine. His sister Sugar Plum is a people person and loves to be petted.  And there is Kringle, the wild one, the Snowman’s only silver-colored reindeer.

Reindeer are Magical

That nose, that nose, that shiny red nose –Rudolph’s glowing rosy schnozzle secret may be due to the dense network of blood vessels in his nose. It seems, Reindeer have 25 percent more capillaries carrying red, oxygen-rich blood in their nasal design than humans. Therefore keeping their noses warm and regulating internal body temperature when pulling Santa’s sleigh through colder climates.

Antlers are the reindeer’s most memorable characteristic. Male and female reindeer can grow antlers annually, but antlers are typically larger in males. The antlers of large males can range up to 39 inches in width and 53 inches in beam length. Females keep their antlers all winter, while males shed theirs soon after the rut in November. Hmmm, Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer, must have been a girl to have those antlers on Christmas Eve!

Large males can stand more than 4 feet tall at the shoulder and exceed 550 lbs in weight; females are slightly smaller. The reindeer’s coat has two layers of fur; a dense woolly undercoat and a longer-haired overcoat consisting of hollow, air-filled hairs. Not only does the fur help regulate the body temperature, but the hollow air-filled hair acts as a life jacket, supporting them high in the water.

Reindeer really do run and leap. They can get more than a foot off the ground, run at approximately 45 mph, and outrun a human at the age of 1 week.  Males live four years less than females, whose maximum longevity is about 17 years.
